Surviving Sexual Violence - South Sudaneses Women 2017

The brutal civil war in South Sudan in both 2013 and 2017 have prompted a massive upsurge of sexual violence, as the country's Nuer and Dinka tribes seek to dominate and humiliate one another.

  • Seventeen-year-old Nyabuol Tut lifts up the plastic sheet of her tent as she holds her two-year-old daughter, Nyalit, inside Bidibidi refugee settlement in northern Uganda. Nyabuol was gang-raped by Dinka soldiers twice, both in December 2015 and March 2017. She gave birth to Nyalit from the first rape by four soldiers and is eight months pregnant from the second rape by seven armed Dinka men. Her parents were shot to death by Dinka soldiers in between both conflicts in 2013 and 2016.

  • Nyatut Jok, 28, was raped by six Dinka soldiers in December 2013 in Wau state when the fighting began. She and her husband had five children and three of them were left with her aunt in Jonglei state. She escaped with two children and has not heard about the husband and the rest of the children ever since. She said the soldiers beat her with the butt of the gun when they found her hiding under the tree and raped her while the children were crying.

  • Nyakoang Gai, 28, was raped by six Dinka soldiers in her home in Jonglei state in December 2013. After the fighting erupted, her husband ran away with four of their children. But she hasn't heard about them ever since and now is living by herself in Bidibidi camp in Uganda. She said the soldiers beat her on her back at the time of the rape and still suffers from the pain.

  • Nyathak Majok, 30, was raped by three Dinka soldiers in 2013 in Juba and gave birth to a boy as a result. She said that Dinka soldiers demanded her husband to eat the flesh of a dead Nuer man. The soldiers still killed the husband even though he complied with them, and also tried to kill her if she didn't eat the flesh of a dead Nuer man. She refused and was raped while she could hear the sounds of the gun shots.

  • Rebecca Choul Bol, 37, was raped by two armed soldiers in December 2013 when she was three months pregnant from her husband with whom she had three children in Juba. She said four women including her were raped on their way to Juba's UN compound. She hasn't heard anything about her husband or parents ever since and now is living in Bidibidi refugee settlement on food rations.
