2011 Japanese Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

March 21, 2011 - Two neighbors of Rikuzentakata embraces as they encountered unexpectedly inside Kojyuen Nursing Home, which was converted into a refugee shelter after the tsunami hit the region. In Rikuzentakata, where more than 80% of the houses were swept away, many displaced residents were dispersed to different shelters. Kojyuen Nursing Home was not an exception. A town with a population of 23,000, about 1,000 people were confirmed dead with 1,300 still missing in Rikuzentakata.
