2011 Japanese Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami
March 17, 2011 - Six days after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the outskirt of Ofunato town was still adrift with debris and rubbles. Ofunato was hit by a high tide of tsunami wave which have reached 23.6 meters in height. Funneled in by the narrow bay, the tsunami continued inland for 3 kilometers, and destroyed 3,498 houses out of 15,138 houses. About 289 lives were confirmed lost.
